'She Said Ryan is Funny' HEE!
Okay, so I'm at the beginning of episode 5 of season 4 of The OC and yes, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!!!!!! Taylor (Autumn Reeser is utterly charming and delightful) and Ryan and Taylor are frickin' adorable and I've just started watching their story ... and judging from the squeeing from my flist, I'm thinking it only gets better. I'm so glad that I decided to watch this! Thanks to Hannah and Roz for helping me get started.

You know I've got it bad when I've already made an icon and have an R/T site bookmarked!

ETA: Wow, what a difference lack of an actress makes. I pretty much was so totally unimpressed with The OC season one which is the only season I watched, but these seven eps of season four? Damn, The OC owns my soul!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I mean, wow!!

When Kaitlin (from Berkeley) told Ryan that Marissa died and he asked how, I knew she was going to say in Tijuana, and even though at the time I watched it, I wanted Marissa to have died, it still made me teary-eyed that Ryan saved her and I actually said out loud, "he gave her three more years" ... and then it flashed to alt-universe Taylor telling Ryan he gave her three more years and guh, it just got me all over again.

Really, I was near-teary-eyed through a lot of this episode. And just because the difference is so startling, memo to Rob fucking Thomas, THIS is how you do GOOD couple angst!!! When Taylor told Ryan that Marissa was alive and it was obvious he didn't want to go back to the "real" world, and Taylor realized that I felt so heartbroken for her, but heartbroken for Ryan also.

So well done and it hurts my heart knowing that the ratings aren't that great now and it probably won't be around another season. It's SOOOO good right now. I love all of the characters -- I mean, Summer is my least favorite! And I like her a lot. (Oh, and Chris Pratt!!! I only watched half a season of Everwood but between it and this, I want to marry him.)

Seriously, I loved Sandy, Kirsten, Julie and Seth from the season 1 when I watched, and liked Summer. And now I still have all of those characters to love, Kaitlin slays me, she's just awesome. Taylor is, of course, the coolest, most awesomelly delightful female character on television right now! Ryan, now that he's not stuck with Marissa, is enjoyable. The twins are great, Che(ster) is great and, man, I don't want Chris Pratt to be gone. I just love everyone and the fact that they actually DEALT with the emotional ramifications of a character's death!?! OHMYGOD!!!! Again, Rob Thomas, pay attention!! Guh, just so, so good! And I can NOT believe I'm writing this about The OC, but I am so in love. I want to have its babies!!

ETA one more thing: Can anyone offer any music vid, wallpaper, fanfic recs? Of course, I'm already so going to read Hannah's (no doubt awesome) Erotic Memoirs of a Soulful College Girl, but are there any other good recs out there?

The OC does own just about everything right now. And Taylor/Ryan are jsut plain awesome an the best thing that's ever happened to the show. This season blows all the others out the water.

But I have to say, I really don't think they dealt with the fallout of Marissa's death very well. I mean, Summer angsted in the one stages of grief scene that was there purely for comedy, and now she's fine. Ryan was in love with her, and she died in his arms, and he was angry for about 3 episodes while trying to track down Volchok. He never even cried. I mean, it would have made sense if he'd been holding it in the entire time, turning his grief into anger and then once they had Volchok he had some sort of breakdown. But.. nothing. Even when reading her letter in this ep all there was was a blank expression on his face. If Logan had died in Veronica's arms and she got pissed, tracked down the guy who was responsible, but was now carrying on like Ryan is, I think everyone would be a bit offended LOL.

It doesnt bother me personally, because I don't want to be reminded of Marissa and I much prefer thinking that the last couple seasons didn't happen :p But I would just be extremely pissed off if I was a Marissa or Ryan/Marissa fan, and I know a lot of people who are, so I can't really agree that they've dealt with her death too well.

But aside from that, I think I'm going to join you in having its babies :D

Actually, I still think they've done pretty well with handling the ramifications of Marissa's death. Summer going through the five stages of grief in a comedic way wouldn't have worked if I thought that was it and she was totally over it, but I think that just fit into her wanting to go back to "normal" in that episode and thinking if she grieved "properly" she could just do that. And since by the end she realized that she had changed and couldn't just revert to being who she used to be, it worked for me.

I don't really agree that Ryan was in love with her-- I mean, I think he loved her, but his relationship with Marissa was unhealthy from the start and always seemed to be driven more by a need to "save" her from her own angst than a true affection. So ultimately failing in that left him with incredible guilt, and the fact that he basically ditched his life in Newport, became isolated in his SELF-DESTRUCTIVE CAGEFIGHTING EXISTENCE and everything, seemed indicative of how much it affected him. Not to mention, they hadn't been in a relationship for months before she died, and over half a year has passed at this point in canon, and at some point you realize you can't just stop living your life. And as for crying... well, I don't think Ryan has seriously broken down at any point in the series, he's just not that kind of character.

Of course, I hated Marissa/Mischa from the beginning, and cheered when she died, SO. I might be biased. ;)

For you, H, this icon!

I think you made a good point about Ryan--I don't think he really understands what love is all about, because well, his family was NOT so big on affection. His reaction worked for me because I don't think he's ever really gone about trying to deal with his emotions.

I have to agree with Hannah. Regarding Ryan, it wasn't just three episodes, it was five months prior to those three episodes as well as the following four episodes. I'm assuming that where Ryan left the letter was someplace important to either Marissa or he and Marissa, and if that's the case, that was Ryan finally really letting go. Even in the non cage-fighting, tracking down Volchok episodes, he was clearly still dealing.

As for Summer, again -- it was the preceding five months and all the episodes leading up to the stages of grief scene. And again, we still saw signs that she was still dealing.

Aw, I'm so glad you caught up and are loving the season! It's so great to have a pairing to squee over without it having been tarnished, isn't it? I think the Christmas episode was not as great in overall quality as the previous episodes, but, it still was really enjoyable.

I suggest checking out piratesdaughter's Ryan/Taylor picspams, because they are chockful of pretty and hilarity!

Okay, I must check out.

It's wonderful!!!

Technically, you're right, but I felt the emotional notes were hit very nicely.

(I so have to make more icons.)

I'm glad you caught up with this season and that it's not disappointing you at all. That makes me giddy.

RT should really take a fricking note from JS on how good self-deprecation is. The show is good, and still makes fun of itself on a regular basis.

Just to let you know this weeks had 8.5 million viewers (but then again, Grey's and CSI were repeats.)

I haven't been reading much OC fic, but I know that txtequilanights has two set after 404 and 405 I think.

I will definitely check it out.

Yes, the comparison between this and RT just boggled my mind. If anyone had told me two years ago that I would think of the two simultaneous seasons of Veronica Mars and The OC, OC would totally own VM's ass, I would have snorted in disbelief so hard, I would have hurt myself.

I fucking love Taylor. I love her so much.

Glad you took our advice and watched. Yes, she is AWESOME!!!

I am totally with you. I've managed to ignore this show's existance for 3 seasons, but it's sucked me in this year. So far this season has killed! And Ryan and Taylor do my little shippy heart good.

I've started watching the S1 eps, and while I think they've been good (my Ryan/Seth love has only grown b/c of watching the early eps), so far I've been kinda unimpressed. Seth, Ryan and Sandy were the only characters that have pulled me in in those first 8 eps. Marissa/Mischa sucks and I'm glad she's gone, and S1 Summer/Rachel has just been kinda meh. But this fourth season seems to be bringing more of the quirk rather than the cliche melodrama, and I'm finding myself watching the newer eps more than once, where with S1, once is enough.

And yes, Kaitlin is awesome. I didn't know if I'd like her when I first watched, but she proved right away that she's not some generic bratty spoiled tv little sister. She kicks ass and always has me smirking.

RT could definitely take some pointers.

I do love this season so far, but I really, really, REALLY was horribly unimpressed with S1. Caitlyn (Kaitlin?) rocks and definitely, RT could take some pointers. He's really such a dumbass.
