EW Fall Preview (VM)
I got my Entertainment Weekly in the mail and it's the Fall TV Preview issue (gee, only a week AFTER shows started premiering. Snort!). I'm not quite sure why I haven't seen this on my flist yet, LOL! since the big feature for Tuesday is Gilmore Girls/Veronica Mars with a photo of Lauren Graham and Kristen Bell like sitting on a porch with a glass of wine. I must say, KB looks particularly pretty in this shot. As the lead story, even being only half of that lead, it is fairly substantial. There's talk of ratings, critical claim, the 13-episode order, the mystery arc format, Hearst and a general air of "it's make or break time." Hopefully someone will be able to scan it soon enough; it's too long to type, especially for the mood I'm in.

I'm not sure how other fall previews are presenting it, but this is the [sarcasm]lovely[/sarcasm] slant offered by Entertainment Weekly.

Fav-fave characters like Wallace, Mac, and Weevil will return, as will the men in Veronica's life, Daddy Mars (Enrico Colantoni) and bad-boy BF Logan (Jason Dohring) -- although a charming if curiously named nerd Piz (Chris Lowell) will vie for her affections.
See? Sigh. And some wonder why others are worried about this season if that's what CW/RT is selling (and based on all previous comments this IS exactly what they're selling). Logan described as "bad-boy" and Piz as "charming." I repeat with all the sarcasm possible: Lovely.

Still to be fair, "bad boys" are often much more interesting and much more loved. (See, I am capable of a kernel of optimism!)

Well let's just hope Piz is kind of like Marty on Gilmore Girls. Really nice, nervous, lower middle class guy who talks a lot and is all a flutter over Rory Gilmore. But in the end she wants her "bad boy" Logan and tells Marty as such, breaking his heart (if reluctantly). I could deal with that because it would only bring Logan/Veronica closer together. It would prove that her feelings could be tested and she is capable of choosing Logan for once.

I doubt that will happen, but that's my optimism since this article was comparing VM with GG and all.

It is rare that a new love interest is introduced if they don't end up winning the heart of the heroine at some point in the season though. I think GG is the only show I can think of (off the top of my head) that has had new "love interests" several times without the heroine turning from the guy she's with. In this case, I'm hoping proximity to Gilmore Girls rubs off on us.

It's more annoying that they are only selling Piz as a new character, unless Parker was mentioned elsewhere? I did get a chuckle out of the "charming if curiously named Piz" comment. Pfft. I think everyone is noticing that you can't take "Piz" seriously as a love interest if that's what Veronica's going to be calling him. 'Veronica and Piz sitting in a tree' doesn't exactly set my heart a-fluttering.

And yeah, it's starting to sound more and more like Veronica WILL consciously choose between the two guys. "Vie for her affections" implies it will happen while she's still with Logan. RT's already done the triangle-by-omission where Veronica doesn't acknowledge one side of the triangle until she's already lost the other. Surely he wouldn't do it again. I mean, I don't want Veronica to choose Piz over Logan but I also don't want a lame not-triangle.

It's kind of hard to hope we're going to get Veronica feeling sad that she's hurting Piz even though she doesn't regret staying with Logan - who she loves. We know Veronica never chooses Logan so every time I hear something about this stupid love interest I jump five steps ahead to where Logan is heartbroken and Veronica is dating a new guy two weeks later.

I'm really anxious for the new season and not in a good way.

I don't watch GG, so I can't comment on that, but from EVERY word we've ever heard out of RT's mouth and KB's preference, I think it's quite, quite, QUITE likely that we will definitely NOT see Veronica choosing Logan.

Nope, no mention of Parker at all.

I think it was aprilbegins who scanned it? Yea, it was a nice feature and all, but I thought the article was written particularly badly. Someone either took five minutes to complete it or let their 13 year old daughter write it. And they called the show "neo-Nancy Drew". Way to gt my feathers tussled, EW. The bad boy thing, is just another one of those generalism that the rest of the article makes. Though, really, it's that whole sentence makes me scratch my head. So Wallace, Mac, and Weevil are fan faves. And not Keith and Logan? And Wallac and Weevil aren't men in Veronica's life? It's just a bad choice of words all togethr.

Ah, she's not on my flist, that explains that. Yes, it's simplistic, but it also means that the guidelines they were given about the character was "bad-boy" Logan and "charming" Piz.

It wasn't on her journal, but veronica_mars earlier yesterday.

I'm with Shan, the quote is just try to simplify the whole stituation for the idiots who haven't ween watching before. Logan is so much more than a bad boy, and I'm hopeful that once people sit down to watch, they will get that.

There's always the hope that Piz will just annoy the shit out of everyone that we'll be better off with Logan than him, right?
Arabian: bellsarabian on September 3rd, 2006 06:34 pm (UTC)
I covered my fear above in my response to Shan about the simplistic nature of it. Simplistic or not, it still portrays Logan=bad, Piz=good.

To be honest, from all I've heard about the character, unless he is amazingly written and played by an incredible great actor with great charisma, I can't see how he won't be annoying to VIEWERS?
WeHo M.: VM - Epicafrocurl on September 3rd, 2006 06:48 pm (UTC)
In which case, we'll just bitch and moan about how Veronica can choose this loser over Logan.

Fandom will get angry and then RT will make some subtle (if late) changes and all will be better.
Arabianarabian on September 3rd, 2006 06:55 pm (UTC)
Sigh, unless the show gets cancelled. He doesn't have the opportunity to make changes like he did last year. They only have a 13-episode order and it could be gone even before then.
WeHo M.afrocurl on September 3rd, 2006 07:01 pm (UTC)
This is true. I'm still being optimistic that we'll get more than the 13, but who knows, really.
