Aww! Ian/Nina -- Young Hollywood Cuties! :)
I was going through Ian and Nina pictures for a different post, and came across these two and decided I wanted to make a post about it because I always thought it was just kinda cool and cute!

Here's Ian at the 2002 4th Annual Young Hollywood Awards.

And here's Nina at the 2010 12th Annual Young Hollywood Awards.

I know, right?! So young and with (natural and MUCH-better looking) brown hair. (I really hate the fake, awful, icky black dye job they do on him for TVD. Sigh.)

PINK CHEEKS! *makes grabby hands*

I love the rosy cheeks. I was so annoyed when this website was grading hot guys, and gave Ian a 9 instead of a 10 because he resorts to putting blush on his face to look prettier. And I was like WTF!?!? Yes, there were comments from people correcting the site that it's NATURAL on Ian, thank you very much.

I saw a quote on tumblr one time (I should have cited it, seriously, because it was so great) from a make-up artist on Smallville who had people harassing him for putting *too much* make-up on Ian and the guy was like, "It's not make-up, it's his fucking skin. He's just that beautiful." Which of course made me LOLOL :D

ETA: I just realized this was in your journal and not at Make a Wish. I wonder if the fans over there would like a look-see, too? Just a thought.

That wasn't the make-up artist on Smallville. That was a director, Steve Antin, of Burlesque who created Young Americans from this interview. Here's the full section on Ian -- and it's even better than just that one quote (seriously, the interview was about Burlesque, but the whole end of it was talking about Ian, Hah!)
Is it strange that coming into Burlesque, many folks don't realize that you've done so much before -- like your previous acting roles or the series that you created, Young Americans?

A lot of people don't. Every now and then there are people like you who saw it and loved it. But stylistically, Young Americans was a staggeringly beautiful show, and a lot of attention was paid to detail in creating a beautiful world and environment.

The other thing that an entirely new generation may not realize they have to thank you for is introducing the world to Ian Somerhalder, who made his acting debut in Young Americans.

Oh yeah! I found Ian Somerhalder. He had never acted before, but his picture came across my desk and I said, "Get that kid in here! I think he could play the role of Hamilton." I just liked the way he looks and I wanted to see if he can do it. He was a Guess model at the time and they kept saying, "He's doing a shoot for Guess," and kept cancelling. I said, "But I want to meet him for a TV series!" Finally he came in and I took him to the network and coached him. I actually shot him myself in my office and went through a long process of helping to get him on TV.

Was he not already sold on transitioning into acting at the time?

He was sort of thinking about it, exploring it, and he was going out for things. But he hadn't done any [acting]. He was just a model. Not just a model -- he was a successful, beautiful young model, but I knew when he came to my office that there was something special about this guy.

Does that mean you keep up with him on The Vampire Diaries?

I do sometimes, because Ian's like my son! I feel like his dad. I love it. He's great, such a charming, lovely, fabulous guy. You would love him. He's also an incredibly bright, thoughtful, earthy guy. Really smart. He is really one of the most beautiful specimens I've ever seen in person. He's so staggeringly beautiful that it's jaw-dropping. You know what they said to me at The WB? "You're putting too much make-up on him, there's too much blush on his cheeks." I'm like, "He doesn't wear any make-up. That's his f***ing skin." He's one of the most beautiful people I've ever seen, and he's a fabulous guy.
*sigh* I LOVE that whole last paragraph. And I love this: "He is really one of the most beautiful specimens I've ever seen in person. He's so staggeringly beautiful that it's jaw-dropping."

Hmm, yeah, I'll post this on MAW. :)

(Edits are hell. Sorry.)

Oh, yay! I'm so glad you knew what it was. Seriously, I swear the quote on tumblr said make-up artist from Smallville, but whatever, now I have the real source!

I didn't realize YA was his very first acting experience...which just makes me awwwww all the more because he was so cute and real on that show! He's so ridiculously talented, seriously.

Have you ever seen anything in print about the surgery Ian had on his ears? I have not, but if there's anyone who would know, I thought you might! :D

No, I haven't, but we all know that's the one bit of cosmetic surgery he did have, LOL!

Nina looks so young and fresh and sweet!

Ian's face is just the most beautiful thing going! I adore his pink cheeks <3

I just loved that they both got essentially the same type of award (eight years apart) and both looked so young! (Even though it was only two years ago for Nina, LOL!) She really has matured in the last few years.

Thanks for sharing these! I've decided I totally love Ian's hair circa 2002, everything about it... It really emphasizes his Nordic/Scandinavian (is it the same thing?) roots (that name has Viking in it, or my name's not Michelle).

Nina looks so cute and pretty! Aww

I've always thought Somerhalder was German actually, but it doesn't really matter, LOL! Somerhalder is from his ADOPTIVE great-grandfather. His blood great-grandfather's name was Hull. (Yes, I had to look that up; I'm not THAT obsessive a fan. But I did know the information was out there, LOL!).
