The Borgias (1st 3 eps) + OMG! CHEMISTRY!
So I decided to watch The Borgias mainly because Neil Jordan is behind it, and he is one of my all-time favorite directors (I was insanely obsessed with The Crying Game). I enjoy it, but the main reason I will probably watch it forever is because of the INSANE CHEMISTRY between Francois Arnaud and Holliday Grainger. They play Cesare and Lucrezia Borgia, brother and sister, yes, but they *are* the Borgias, and history has long thought it possible that the two shared a more than sibling-type relationship.

The show is playing that up, in that their scenes are full of declarations of love and physical closeness that is much more fitting to lovers than brother and sister. They just don't quite cross that line, but, lordy, I wish they would! Because, dude, these two actually give Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev a run for the money in the chemistry department. For reals! This is a video someone made highlighting their scenes from the first two episodes:

And here is their one (sob) main scene in episode three:

Such. Amazing. Chemistry. GAH!

Alas, interviews with the actors and Jordan have said that (as of now) they'll just continue skirting that line, so a hot make-out session is not in the cards (as of now), but still ... SO HOT!

Other thoughts ...

- Francois Arnaud is really quite, quite delicious as Cesare. I had my doubts based on the previews, but seeing him in action? Whoo, boy! He's got charisma out the ying-yang, is a great actor, has a beautiful, rich voice and is not too hard on the eyes. I love his Cesare.

- Unlike his brother who I hope is supposed to come off as an idiotic, simpering fool. Because that's how he rubs me.

- Holliday Grainger (as Lucrezia) is so pure and beautiful-looking it's crazy. At 23, she's definitely older than the 14-year old she plays, but she has such an innocent quality about her that it works. I didn't realize it until looking up her age that she also played Sophia on Merlin, and I do remember thinking she did a wonderful job in that role as well.

- Jeremy Irons is Jeremy Irons; he's great, and Joanne Whalley -- an actress I've long been a fan of -- as the mother of his children is wonderful and has already pretty much stolen every scene she's in.

- I do wonder what's up with Cesare's assassin. I don't get why he's so devoted to Cesare. I keep waiting for him to either write Cesare a love poem, or betray him. He's kinda majorly creepy.

Overall, it's good, and I'd watch it with or without the uber-hot-incestuous Cesare and Lucrezia, but right now, they are the major highlight.

ETA: I clipped and uploaded their first three scenes as well, if anyone is interested.

The chemistry between Lucrezia and Cesare is crazy! I should feel squicked out that they're brother and sister but I kinda of don't. I think it would be very interesting if they did cross the line. I'm hoping at least someone calls them out but that they may be further in the series if the show goes beyond series 1. At this point, Lucrezia is only on her first marriage and I think it was her second marriage that rumors began to surface... if the show follows history.

I adore Holliday Granger. She's the only reason I began watching this show in the first place.

I don't get why he's so devoted to Cesare.

I think it's just the money right now. Cesare is paying double. At least, that's what I get from it.

If anyone had told me that anyone on tv right now could have chemistry anywhere close to Ian and Nina's, I would have scoffed, but these two definitely do. It's just like whoah!

I too hope that they cross the line at some point, I mean, come on, it's the Borgias! If anyone, outside of V.C.Andrews, is a gimme in this regard, it's them!

RE; Assassin, I guess so, but he's uber-devotion is just creepy in my book.

(Anon was me. Stupid lj being wonky.)

Yes! More people watching The Borgias! How awesome is it? Everything about it; the script, cast, sets, cinematography, is utterly flawless.

Jeremy Irons owns it, true fact.

Cesare/Lucrezia is all kinds of wonderful. I love just how joyful and innocent she is, and Cesare's protective possessiveness is positively endearing. I love them!

I thought about posting after the first two episodes airing because of the L/C chemistry, but then went, nah!! Then I watched last night's episode and the chemistry just EXPLODED off the screen in their one big screen, and I had to. I just had to.

Neil Jordan is amazing; I LOVE him.

I will pretty much worship the ground Lucretia walks on--because I adore her so.

Plus, she and Cesare are pretty great together.

Holliday Grainger is just like this beautiful mixture of a sunbeam and a white rose made flesh.

Plus, she and Cesare are pretty great together.

And there's this too. :)

Yeah, I don't think he'll betray him, but he's so creepily devoted to him so quickly. It's ... creepy. Whip me, my Lord. I'll earn your trust, my Lord. I worship every word that falls from your lips, my Lord.

Fabulous cast they put together, I wholeheartedly agree, with Arnaud, Grainger, Irons and Whalley being the awesome standouts for me.

Ah, Cesare and Lucrezia!!! SO MUCH CHEMISTRY! SO ADORABLE! I &hearts them so!

I was going to watch this but then got lazy and didn't...but now. I've been shipping the incest since Arrested Development and haven't looked back.

But these two do have major chem and nooooooooooooooow. You might have convinced me. I wish I still had On Demand.

I had to watch it for Neil Jordan, and it is very good, but yeah, oh, boy, their chemistry is like WHOAH!

(And if you haven't, I'd also recommend giving The Vampire Diaries a try -- get past the first three (upon first watch, lame) episodes and it starts to get good at episode four, great at episode seven, OMG!amazing at episode thirteen, and but for a few merely good episodes afterwards (episode 17 of season two just aired) has pretty much remained amazing. It has become my favorite television show EVER. (I actually love it as much as the couple I adore on the show.)

I kkknnnoooowwww!!! Their chemistry is fantastic.... so much I feel awful and guilty. I SHOULDN'T SHIP them... -but I do)... XD

Eh, V.C. Andrews got me cool with fictional incest ages ago, LOL! And, yes, this is based on history, but it's still a fictional account. These two are soooooooooo hot.
Beckbeck_liz on April 12th, 2011 10:56 am (UTC)
Yeah, I'm not normally into that kind of thing, but the Cesare/Lucretia stuff is tripping all kinds of buttons for me. And Arnaud appears to be one of those who can have chemistry with a brick, so.

I keep waiting for him to either write Cesare a love poem, or betray him.

*snerk* You know, from the slasher's POV, this is exactly why he's so devoted. Took one look at Cesare and fell head-over-heels in love. :-D

DUDE!, that is how it's playing out. I am sorry, but guy is creepily devoted.

Awesome review! <3

May I just say I've studied the Borgia family. And I really REALLY hope the writers won't chicken out here and just follow the history. And the history says Cesare and Lucrezia Borgia were something more than brother and sister. It's been rummored that Cesare stood behind every death of Lucrezia's husbands. I can't remember now how many she had, lol. But the reason of the killings - jealousy. And she had nothing against it.

Just love "The Borgias" now. And the chemistry between Cesare and Lucrezia (Francois Arnaud and Holliday Grainger) is INSANE! And I love it! <3
Arabian: Cesare&Lucrezia01arabian on April 12th, 2011 12:58 pm (UTC)
Thank you. :)

I have read up on the Borgia family, and I thought it was just very strongly rumored that they were more. Yes, their devotion to each other was very, very strong -- to the point that they did love one another greater than any of her other relationships, including her marriages -- but that there was no proof they actually went there. I do know it was also rumored that one of her children was his, but again, all rumors, no substantiation.

Still, this is a fictional account, so I definitely hope they go with the rumors because being denied the chance to see Arnaud and Grainger show Cesare and Lucrezia's full devotion would just be a waste.

Nice! :D I wish the first vid had actual clips instead of being a video, though the one you made more than makes up for it (I can't believe they're supposed to be brother & sister!! :p )

I can't get over how YouTube has cracked down on clips...grrrr... [/rant]

I'd forgotten how hot inappropriate relationships can be! ;) That one moment in the first clip when he just sort of leans in like he's going to kiss her but doesn't was like...WHOA! :p

I am so excited to see you post this! I read your LJ all the time for your wonderful Damon/Elena commentary and episode reviews, so I love that you've gotten into The Borgias as well, because Lucrezia/Cesare is my new obsession.

They are so adorable, and so hot at the same time, I can't even. I'm usually a shy lurker, but I had to comment when I saw this, it just makes me excited that other people are getting into The Borgias.

My review of the first couple episodes is on my LJ, if you wanna check it out :) Your commentary is a great read, thanks for the awesome Lucrezia/Cesare love.

First of all! OMG! I love you! I just read your review of the last TVD episode and you seem to like so and appreciate so many of the things that I do, so I totally friended you.

And you like The Borgias and Lucrezia/Cesare too. AWESOME!

And I agree, they are not only hot, they are adorably as well. How often does that happen?!

Aww, thanks, I totally friended you back! I always love what you write about TVD episodes, sometimes I feel like you live in my brain.

Plus, you feed my Damon/Elena obsession without hating on Stefan or hating on the show, which is hard to find sometimes in this fandom. I'm one of those incurably happy TVD fans who loves EVERYTHING about what the show chooses to be.

And yes! Adorable AND hot is sooo hard to find, and I found myself totally smacked in the face with it and the Lucrezia/Cesare chemistry from moment one. I'm usually all about the slow build, but Showtime has just slayed me here. LOVE IT.

I ship it. I ship it so hard. No regrets, just ~love. It's nice to see a treatment of this family that is intriguing and dark without being too sensationalistic. They flirt with violence and incest and sexual deviancy, but these are still real people instead of caricatures. Most fictional treatments of the family are all womp womp evil people herp derp derp.

Is there a place I can find all 3 episodes? Thank you. For me I have only seen 3 couples with such inane chemistry that it explodes on screen one of them being Nian, s ic ant wait to watch these two,
