I posted long, rambling thoughts about tonight's How I Met Your Mother in the Barney/Robin lj community, I figured I'd post it here as well.

While this was somewhat depressing, I'm okay with it, all of it. The first five minutes were PERFECT! and the rest was all in character in every way. Plus, I don't think that Barney/Robin are over. It was very clear that Barney/Robin were just not dealing with the THEM aspect of it. It was all about Ted ... and I get why. I would have actually been disappointed had Barney been more worried about Robin, rather than Ted. He considers Ted his best friend, he loves him and while I do believe he has legitimate feelings for Robin, they are nowhere near the surface. For him, the bad feelings were all about betraying Ted. And he DID betray Ted; it wasn't like Robin was just any ole' ex. Robin was the one that Ted thought was THE ONE! Robin was the one that Ted chased after for a year and was crazy about from the moment he met her, and Barney was privy to ALL of this.

As for Robin telling Ted, I don't think she was betraying Barney, or being selfish. She, like Barney, could not deal with it, because she knew that Ted would be upset and she couldn't be normal with him, and even hope to be friends with him the way they were had she not told him.

{Deep breath} As for Barney taking advantage of Robin, of course everyone would assume that that is exactly what Barney did considering the situation. The only times Barney has done those truly, genuine things he's done everything he could to keep that full disclosure from as many people as possible. He's built his reputation and works very, very hard to maintain it. And because Robin IS the one who makes the cracks about the self-loathing women all the time (more than anyone in the group), she probably HAS convinced herself that she was that vulnerable -- otherwise she NEVER would have slept with him -- and therefore he did take advantage of her.

Why would she do this? Because she feels guilty; she feels like she did betray Ted and so she wants, being human and selfish -- which we know she is, SHE knows she is, to transfer the blame of the betrayal on someone else. And Barney's it.

Did Ted overreact? No, not really ... considering the history with Robin, considering that Barney knew all of the history, considering that when he left the bar Robin was drinking and miserable, considering that all he knows of Barney in relation to his "relationships" so it makes sense that Ted would think that Barney DID take advantage of Robin, and did so not caring that he was betraying Ted.

Was I happy that it wasn't hearts and flowers for the BrOtp? Of course not. But this was more realistic, more in keeping with the show, the characters and their histories. And I trust Craig Thomas and Carter Bays ... they've yet to let me down, almost three years running. And, they've been setting Barney and Robin up from, at the very latest, S1E14 ("Zip, Zip, Zip"), they are not over by a long shot. As I mentioned earlier above, it was very specific that we received very little insight regarding each other from Robin and Barney to each other or anyone else. Barney told Marshall that the sex with Robin was "awesome," but that was it. There was nothing else that indicated their feelings about it ... except in relation to Ted. Even during the whole "was he amazing?" conversation with Lily, Robin didn't give an inkling as to how she felt about the night.

Now I do think that she was seriously shaken by it because she IS the one who always makes the cracks about the women who sleep with Barney. And here she did it herself ... so that's going to make her ignore it first, then likely re-evaluate those women, then herself and then Barney ... and THEN she and Barney. Right now she's still in the guilt over betraying Ted mode that she hasn't even gotten to the ignoring what this means about her part yet. That will come, I believe; it will come.

Right now, though, it was very specifically written about TED, and not Robin and Barney ... because that had to be dealt with first before Robin and Barney could even begin to look deeper into what led them to sleeping with each other in the first place. We'll get that next season, I'm sure. (And yes, damnit, there WILL be a next season.)

As for the tag? This is nearing the end of the season so they're ending every episode with a WTF?!?! I highly doubt that Robin and Ted will re-hook-up. That ship has sailed. It's now Robin and Barney who have just docked.

I'm glad; and you may enjoy it more than those who saw it on the East Coast and DIDN'T get the chance to think it through yet. LOL!

It's just for me that if I trust the writers and the story, I'm very inclined to cut them slack. And I trust Thomas and Bays.

tag? I didn't get a tag! stupid DVR!!

What happened?

Also I agree with you, they need to deal with Ted first. Also I'm thinking that whenever we learn who bracket girl was, something might happen between them too.

The tag went back to the goat in the bathroom. Ted VO laughed and said something along the lines of, 'Oh, the goat was locked in the bathroom eating Robin's washcloth. But I got it mixed up. Robin was living at the apartment during my 31st birthday.'

So, some people are thinking it means that Robin and Ted re-hook up and they're living together in a year. I don't. I think it's just misdirection. He didn't say "living together," he said "at the apartment."

oh that could be anything... she's staying there for a bit while her apt gets fixed, Ted's moved in with Stella and she's subletting... etc

Right, could be anythng, so I think it's totally misdirection.

I also found it very telling that Barney made the joke about getting up and leaving in the morning, BUT DIDN'T. In fact, it was Robin who got up and left first.

Their first post-sex bar convo (beyond the stupid double entendre puns) reminded me of "When Harry Met Sally" in its awkwardness.

I will say the whole Barney and Ted limo convo was the first time this show has gone S7 of "Friends" on me and I didn't mind it. Great mix of comedy and (relationship) drama. :D

Agreed on all counts. I think they're handling this the right way for long-term goodness, even if it breaks my BrOtp loving heart right now.

This is all very true and a very nice analysis. And I can understand why and I do appreciate Carter and Bays and know they think long term not short term, so I'm just swallowing my disappointment and keep on hoping.

It'll happen and it will be ... AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!
