Heh, just realized something re: "The Descent"
So after season one, we had the summer hiatus, yes? Yes. And the first new episode after that excruciatingly long wait was a very Damon-centric episode. Yay. Come December, we have our first not-as-excruciating-but-still-painful wait until a new episode. And the first new episode after said painful wait is ... a very Damon-centric episode, the first one since "The Return."

Uh huh.

ooohh very interesting observation!!
do you think it's a coincidence?? I think it could be possible that they intentionally use his character to draw people back in because hes (really it's no secret lol) the most popular among the fans?? *-)

OR it could all just be an awesome coincidence =P

I'm leaning towards they know his character is a main draw. I mean, I think of ALL of the pre-airing of "The Descent" articles that mentioned Ian Somerhalder (specifically his hotness -- it was nice that post-episode, all of them mentioned Ian Somerhalder, specifically his awesome acting!) as one of the key reasons to return with no other actor specifically mentioned.

Lost being what introduced him to most mainstream America or not, TVD is where he's truly broken out. He IS the break-out star of this show, hands down.

Interesting, indeed and I vote for the not a coincidence. I think midnightblack07 has something with the "they intentionally use his character to draw people back in" thought.

Maybe we'll have another Damon-centric episode to look forward to after the next string of re-runs ...

Oh, I totally think it's because "they intentionally use his character to draw people back in." TOTALLY!

Maybe we'll have another Damon-centric episode to look forward to after the next string of re-runs ...

I certainly think it's a good possibility. :)

HA! It's funny you should note this because here in Australia, 'The Decent' aired last night and the channel that it's on (Go), kept showing promos for the shows it was going to be featuring in the near future, including TVD.

That in itself was not all that interesting... what was interesting was the fact that the ONLY footage they showed for ANY of the various promos I saw was Damon or Damon/Elena. And not even Damon+Elena, it definitely had a Damon/Elena vibe...

Even the promo gyus and girls seem to know what the people want...!
Arabian: Damon & Elena(PR)04arabian on February 1st, 2011 02:15 am (UTC)
That's partly why I believe that Damon/Elena are endgame. Ian, Damon, Damon/Elena are clearly the show biggest draws, you know?

I think I'll go ahead and accept this as more evidence that Damon has actually become TVD's protagonist. Now that I think about it, "Bloodlines" and "Founder's Day" were Damon-centric, too. So if he's at the center of this year's season finale, I will consider it official. :P

Oooh, now, I want to make a list of each episode and it's central character!
Arabian: Damon01arabian on February 1st, 2011 02:15 am (UTC)
Go for it! It'll be interesting to map it out.

Posted! It is not nearly as cut-and-dry as I thought it would be.

This is my going theory, too, yeah.

I want to add my voice to wanting this list!

I would like you to know I was quoting you to one of my offline friends with regard to Stefan saying "...and this is my story" cut to Damon in the middle of the dark scary road meaning that Stefan's story is about Damon, amen and forever.

So yes, I believe and concur with all y'all here that this is the case.

There just true facts. *nods* True facts right there.

amen and forever and ever, amen

oohhh I'd like to add my vote to seeing that list of episodes & their central characters!!

I think there's alot of credence to the idea that Damon has grown into the show's protagonist... IMO, out of all the characters, Damon, Caroline, and Jeremy have been the most developed; the fact that he's the only one in the main trio that falls into this category says a great deal *nods*

Ha, I take your meaning.

The showrunners are definitely aware of Damon/Ian's popularity.

Yup, I think so. ;)

I'd say after he got voted "Sexiest Beast" for that online poll for Entertainment Weekly, beating out the ever ridiculous Edward Cullen, that sewed it up for what direction this show ought to be taking.

I remember watching the first episode and wondering why he was "third" in the credits. He's obviously #1 with a bullet in everyone's hearts.
Arabian: Damon01arabian on February 1st, 2011 08:19 pm (UTC)
Well, I suppose being 3rd in the credits made sense at the time. He didn't show up really until towards the end of the first episode, and he really was very secondary to Elena and Stefan in the first batch of episodes.

Soooooooo glad that's changed now. :)
Mittensugarsyringe on February 1st, 2011 02:50 am (UTC)
That's true. Funny coincidence!
Arabian: Damon03arabian on February 1st, 2011 08:20 pm (UTC)
Hah, I don't think it's a coincidence at all. I'm thinking they well knew which episodes would fall when and made sure that it was a heavy Damon episode each time. Uh huh.
x5valex5vale on February 1st, 2011 08:37 am (UTC)
I think it was a direct consequence of what they did in 2.11. I wa exepcting Damon dealing with Rose. I wasn't expecting the magnificent way the made him deal with her storyline.

Anyway I guess it's because of two reasons: Ian is the break out star of this show (and I read somewhere he is the most well payed one, but I am not sure about it) and Damon is probably the most compelling character on it.

The development he had is something the other main characters haven't had. Not Elena, not Stefan. I'd like to see more on the little brother too btw.

I think Damon and Caroline are the most interesting character at the moment.

The more I get into TVD world, the more I see how much alike TVD and Supernatural are. It's funny :)

Arabian: Damon04arabian on February 1st, 2011 08:22 pm (UTC)
Well, story-wise it was a direct consequence, but that story was plotted by the exec producers who clearly knew which said episode they would be coming back with and they made sure it was a Damon-heavy episode.

He is not only the highest-paid on TVD, he's the highest paid on the CW Network with $40,000 an episode. Which makes sense since he's been a lead on two tv shows (Young Americans and Lost). That kind of resume automatically guarantees you a specific amount when negotiating.

Heh, love that moment in your icon. ("He's ridiculously hot." Yes, he is, Jenna. Yes, he is.)
x5valex5vale on February 1st, 2011 08:34 pm (UTC)
Yep, you are right. Anyway I think Jensen Ackles is paid the same amount...pretty much.

Oh he is...no doubt about that :))))
Arabian: Damon01arabian on February 1st, 2011 08:38 pm (UTC)
What I read, it was Ian who was the highest paid actor on the CW period. No other actor from the CW was on the list that came out from TV Guide a few months back.
x5valex5vale on February 1st, 2011 08:43 pm (UTC)
I remember that, thanks for clarifying.
