Everlasting love, huh?
On the Vampire Diaries, I don't know just how significant the song choices and the lyrics that can be clearly heard in scenes are supposed to be. But if there *is* supposed to any kind of significance there (and I rather think there is), I found the lyrics audible during the Damon/Elena tomb scene in "The Sacrifice" very interesting. You can hear the first bit of lyrics listed below, but the really clear part is bolded and begins at 0:23 in the video --

You turn the room a shade heaven
    You know my name
No one ever will love me better than
    Your everlasting love

I found only one way in and no way out
Things that make you go hmmm......

SQUEE!

Knowing the amount of attention that goes into choosing the songs for this show, and given the way that certain lyrics of certain songs have been used in the past, I choose to think that this could be very significant.

We have history on our side here. Think about the songs we chose for the meme and how they were lyrically appropriate for the scenes they were in. Another example would be OneRepublic's "All This Time" in 2x03 when Stefan is telling Elena that he came to MF to start a life with her.

Oooh, I like this game! Please excuse me while I go see exactly what lyrics were playing during the end of "The Return" (because you know I totally have to now) :P

During the Damon/Elena scene at the end, it's "Come Home" by One Republic ft. Sara Bareilles: http://www.lyrics-celebrities.anekatips.com/come-home-lyrics-onerepublic-ft-sara-bareilles

This is what is audible during the scene:
I get lost in the beauty
Of everything I see
The world ain’t as half as bad
As they paint it to be
If all the sons
If all the daughters
Stopped to take it in
Well hopefully the hate subsides and the love can begin
It might start now yeah
Well maybe I’m just dreaming out loud
Until then

Come home, come home
Cause I’ve been waiting for you
For so long, for so long
And right now there’s a war between the vanities
But all I see is you and me
The fight for you is all I’ve ever known
Ever known
So come home

Everything I can’t be
Is everything you should be
And that’s why I need you here
Everything I can’t be
Is everything you should be
And that’s why I need you here

Ooh, that's pretty perfect for that scene I think.

Other lines that stand out to me:

It might start now
Well maybe I'm just dreaming out loud

And right now there's a war between the vanities
But all I see is you and me
The fight for you is all I've ever known

I think that's great since Damon was putting them in a situation in which they were either going to take off romantically or have nothing--his hope for reciprocation mixed with doubt. And didn't it all boil down to her pride vs. his? Love love love. So much of it is appropriate. The bridge is great for describing how Damon might feel about Elena.

Whoever picks out the music for this show does a really good job most of the time, I think.

This song works really well, for sure, plus it's also a great song, which always helps.

You should check out the audible lyrics in all their songs. (I know that Sleeperstar's "I Was Wrong" in "Rose" has some interesting audible lyrics. :)

I'm sure I've read that they pick the songs very carefully.

btw, will not be able to call you tonight. I have this lingering headache (not quite a migraine but nothing's touching it, medication-wise), so when I get home from school/work, I will probably just want to crash. Hopefully we can talk this weekend?

I'm pretty sure I've read that too, but I don't want to be too hopeful in grasping something like this, you know.

Aww, I hope you feel better. I've been there.

Great catch. I agree that historically the songs have been chosen carefully and their lyrics (especially the audible ones) are significant.

This song gives me hope for the future of DE. I also noticed Damon's expression once Elena leaves. You can see how much it personally cost him to be that close to her and having her so frustrated. *sigh*

Thanks for posting.

Yup, that scene was so intense all around!

I think the music on this show are definately very telling (like everyone who posted above me, I also heard that they take care when picking them out). There are times when the connection between the lyrics and the music is so glaring you can't help but deduce that the song was picked with purpose.

A really big scene where this was the case was the porch scene between Damon and Elena in "Bad Moon Rising" where she answers the question of whether or not he has lost her forever. The song that was playing "Ashes and Wine" by A Fine Frenzy was just beyond appropriate.

is there a chance,
a fragment of light at the end of the tunnel,
a reason to fight,
is there a chance you may change your mind,
or are we ashes and wine?

Oh, wow! That's amazing. I am going to be paying so much attention to the music from now on.

I've heard that too which is why I *am* optimistic. I feel like going through the lyrics audible in all of their scenes now!

I did notice that in "Ashes and Wine" too! SQUEE!
