30 Day Vampire Diaries-Meme, Day 23
Day 23 - Your favorite minor character?

Sheriff Liz Forbes (Marguerite MacIntyre)

I &hearts Liz! I know that she's so not the best mom, and honestly, she's not that great of a sheriff either, and when pushes comes to shove, when vampires are in play, she's a pretty lousy friend too (see Damon; see Logan). But I still love her. Because like Caroline, but in a completely different way, she tries sooo hard. She's a good person who genuinely wants the best for her town and she's just dealing with forces that are so beyond her control. And, yeah, the Damon-fangirl in me just appreciates the hell out of the fact that she's one of the only people who actually took the time to get to know Damon -- and even without knowing his secret -- became a genuine friend to him, and it is completely reciprocated.

The friendship between Damon and Liz is both unexpected and very touching. It literally broke my heart when she learned what he was and instantly began to conscider him as a enemy (but at the same time, it's understandable)
And yet, when she got to talk to Caroline and managed to overcome her whole ''vampire'' issue, I had hope for her to end up understanding Damon as well (although it would have been harder because Damon isn't your friendly neighborhood vampire). Too bad she got compelled! :'(

I think we'd already seen a teeny bit of the thaw -- even if it wasn't acknowledged -- in that she DID speak to Damon briefly about Caroline, almost like she forgot and spoke to him like he was her friend. *sobs* Darn her vampire hate!

I do adore her. She has such a profound impact for being as minor a character as she is. And I love her dynamic with Caroline...it feels like a real mother/daughter relationship. They fight. They bicker. But they love each other when push comes to shove. And I appreciate the non-grayness of her views on vampires. If you're going to believe in something, you have to believe with everything. And in her mind, a vampire is not the person who once inhabited the body, which explains so much about her view on them and her reaction to Caroline. I love what the character of Liz brings out in both Caroline and Damon, and in many ways the town.

Yes, yes, yes. THIS! THIS! THIS!!!!

I love Liz. She is real and honest and sticks to her guns. She's the first to admit in her lack of parenting skills but she tries so hard. You can completely see where Caroline gets it from.

Her friendship with Damon is touching and true. She brings out the good in many other characters.

Good choice.

Yup, like mother like daughter.

In the beginning, I wasn't fan Liz fan, probably because she was a nemesis for Damon, but I have grown to really like her. She's no mother of the year and she and Caroline certainly have issues other than Caroline now being a vampire, but she tries in her own way to be the parent that Caroline needs and when she fails, she willingly admits her limitations. I know that Caroline compelled Liz to forget about what she knew, but I would love to see a further exploration of their relationship.

Another reason why I like Liz is that she has a genuine friendship with Damon and from what we've been shown, she treasures it. Yes, she turned on Damon when she found out he was a vampire, but after years of being told that something/someone is evil and must be destroyed, her feelings and actions were understandable. Even after she found out about Damon, I think that she was holding on to Damon, her friend rather than Damon, the vampire. Damon showed her that he valued her as a person and as his friend when he encouraged her to embrace Caroline even though she had turned.

Oh, see I never thought of Liz as a nemesis for Damon simply because I don't think he ever considered her one. He was always three, four steps ahead of her, so she was never a problem for him really.

I really miss seeing her; I want to see her and Caroline and her and Damon interact again. See, if there's a teeny difference, because compelling only takes away the memory, not the feeling behind it. Uh huh.

I love Liz. She just breaks my heart all the time, in a good way. You pointed out that she is one of the few people who has gotten to know Damon, but I get the feeling that Damon is one of the few people who has gotten to know her, too. She doesn't seem close to any of the other adults in the town, and apparently she was made fun of pretty badly in high school or something (Lezzie Forbes, which is interesting since she ended up marrying a gay man).

That's a really good point. It's like when he complimented Liz out of uniform at that one function. You know she just doesn't get noticed like that often; it's a small part, but Damon notices and listens to her. Sigh.

And like Caroline, she has great hair! This is so my choice as well, no thought required! ♥ her!

Erm, well, I don't like her hair, but to each their own, LOL! I do adore her, though, and nice to know she's your choice too. WOOHOO!

Aaaaaaand, KERMIT!!

hehe I *hearts* Liz too; I think I would have to name her my favorite minor character was well; there's something very genunie and likeable about her, and the fact that (like you said) she took the time to befriend Damon and even defended him point blank against Mason Lockwood when he first accused Damon of what, in her eyes, was the most grave of offences (until, of course, the vervain proved Mason right).

great choice =)

Yup!! Very much so. There's such a warmth about her that I love. :)
