30 Day Love-Meme, Day 19
Day 19 - A pairing you’ve rooted for since the beginning?

Jack and Jennifer Deveraux (Matthew Ashford and Melissa Reeves), Days of Our Lives

I tried to be fair with this and not count couples that I stumbled on at some point into their story, or couples that I were pre-disposed to look out for. Instead, I only looked at couples whose story I happened to see from the actual beginning and liked upon their first interaction. And, surprisingly, I could only think of one. So many other couples I love, I came in after they'd started, or I saw their spark/chemistry as the show progressed even if they weren't the intended couple. The pairing for me in this category is Jack and Jennifer from Days of Our Lives.

I remember not liking Jennifer at all even though I'd been watching her on the show for a few years. I did, however, like Jack and had already shipped him with someone (Melissa, if anyone's curious, LOL!). Then Jennifer's main love interest, Frankie, left the show along with his portrayer, and the show had to set up a new story/love interest for her. And in that interim, they threw her into a filler story, interning as a reporter at "The Spectator," the town newspaper owned and edited by Jack Deveraux. Again, it was supposed to be filler, but many viewers, including myself, saw this special something between the two actors immediately. And that was the beginning of what became one of the soaps' most beloved couples of all time. I still have fond memories of the duo. They were fantastic, and no matter what stupid crap the show threw at them (and continue to do so), when they're onscreen together, they continue to be fabulous.

Past Days ...

Day 01 - What is your current favorite ship?
Day 02 - What was your very first ship?
Day 03 - A pairing that needs to happen now?
Day 04 - The pairing with the most chemistry?
Day 05 - The pairing with the least chemistry?
Day 06 - Best kiss?
Day 07 - The most heartbreaking scene?
Day 08 - The pairing with the most baggage?
Day 09 - The most believable relationship?
Day 10 - The least believable relationship?
Day 11 - Your dream pairing?
Day 12 - Who had the best wedding?
Day 13 - Your favorite television pairing?
Day 14 - What is your favorite book pairing?
Day 15 - What is your favorite real life pairing?
Day 16 - What is the absolute worst pairing?
Day 17 - A pairing you thought would never work out, but did?
Day 18 - What is the cutest pairing?

Aw, I loved Jack and Jen, particularly as portrayed by Melissa Reeves and Matthew Ashford! They were such perfect snark partners at The Spectator and Jennifer really grew up and became a fully formed character at that point.

Wait, what!?!? What do you mean? Nope, nope, Matt & Missy are the ONLY ones who've ever played them. I refuse to acknowledge that anyone else ever did. ;)

That really was just a an unexpectedly brilliant move on their part; they could have had no idea how it would work wonders for that character.

I clapped a little when I saw this.

There's a message board that has the whole J&J story available for download. In fact, it actually starts before J&J and I think it includes every Matt Ashford scene. A few years ago, I started watching them and it's amazing how well the story holds up. They just had a classically breezy romance reminiscent of movies from the 30s and 40s.

Then Jennifer's main love interest, Frankie, left the show along with his portrayer, and the show had to set up a new story/love interest for her.

Yep, although I think Jennifer working at the Spectator didn't start until after the next love interest, Emilio, had left--to do the TV series Fame I believe. That's when they moved Jennifer into the filler story that just worked so well that they kept developing stories to keep them in the same orbit. Emilio then came back when his show was canceled which created a triangle that really kicked off J&J. (BTW, this held up more than I remembered. I hated Emilio back then but rewatching made me realize it was mostly Emilio and Jen I hated. Jack and Emilio were hilarious together.)

Anyway, I'm rambling. Not only did I love these two from the beginning, like you, but they were my first soap ship. Like you, I always liked Jack or at least was fascinated by him and it made me mad that when Missy Reeves left the last time, they got rid of MAsh too even though Jack's brother had just come back from the dead. Jack was a wonderful and complex character before Jennifer, how hard would it be to write him as one "after" Jennifer?

Oh, that's right. For some reason I thought Emilio came in later. I loved Emilio, just couldn't stand he and Jennifer.

They weren't my soap couple though, not by a long shot. I'd probably had at least 10 soap couples before them at that point, LOL! But I did love Jack and Jenn. :)

I can remember watching as a 13-14 year old girl, Jack and Jennifer's first kiss in his office at the Spectator and my heart actually TWINGING in my chest. I loved them so, so, so much. I quit watching Days a long time ago, but I will always have such fond memories of this pairing from the early '90s. The Cruise of Deception and cave!sex was the best thing EVAH.

Just so you know, I just fell in love with you a little bit more for choosing them, for knowing them, for loving them. ♥ ♥ ♥

Oh, I was about six years older than you then so I was very underwhelmed by the cave!sex, LOL! I definitely wanted steamier at that point, hee! But I have so very many fond memories of Jack and Jenn. They were so frickin' awesome.

Well, I was young, so to me, it probably seemed steamier than it was, but in their defense, I think they had to make it as sweet and gentle as possible considering Jack's past. Remember, it was The Rapist and the Virgin for like ever...oh, the controversy!

I still have tons of VHS tapes of them somewhere. I should bust those out.
Arabian: TVarabian on January 11th, 2011 01:18 pm (UTC)
Oh, I'm sure. I've watched some things now that when I was younger I had a much different impression.

I think it was how they filmed it and such. It could have played as steamier, more intimate, but instead they went for cheap jokes and stuff. Still, J&J were fantastic.tv

LOL. Yes, well Matt Ashford did always like to go for the laugh, even though it was his dramatic stuff that always got me the most. I'm seriously going to have to find my tapes now...
Arabian: A/J -Squee!arabian on January 11th, 2011 05:39 pm (UTC)
Well, that I don't blame on him, it was the stupid writers deciding that they should ONLY write comedy for Matt Ashford once they found out how adept he was at it. Because, yeah, his dramatic stuff was fantastic.

Awww Jack and Jennifer! What a great couple. I remember watching them back in the day and just loving how cute they were.

Cute, yes, they were definitely cute!

But only Jack when played by Matthew Ashford.

I remember these two. I used to watch DOOL religiously, but they lost me when Marlena was possessed by the devil. :)

I don't know what you're talking about. As far as I will allow myself to recall, Matthew Ashford is the only Jack. Ever. Mark Valley entered my consciousness with Boston Legal. Yup, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I've watched Days on and off since John was Roman and he was paired with Genie Francis' Diana Colville.

Yay! I love Jack & Jennifer. Lol, I actually never watched DOOL but saw some J/J clips on YouTube a few years back and it quickly sucked me in. I found the Devoted to Deveraux forum and watched a couple years of their storylines...I even made a fanvid for them :-D: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eC7yfPPN9gA (yeah, sorry about the crappy clip quality).

Aww, that was an adorable video! Brought back some great memories, I remembered so many scenes. Sigh.

Oh, Jack and Jenn.
