The 5 things I wanted most from the 2nd season of Vampire Diaries
So there are five things that I wanted from the new season of The Vampire Diaries. Just five specific things that I thought had at least the possibility of happening due to scenes, moments, etc. throughout season one. The first was obvious, and doesn't even need to be spoiled because of the source material. I want to see Damon and Elena grow closer. Obviously that's going to happen. The other four were not as set in stone, but one of them was pretty likely so I wasn't that worried. I've already been spoiled that it would happen (woohoo!), two of the remaining three were spoiled earlier tonight (shazaam!). And now, the fifth thing I wanted, the one that I considered the least likely to happen ... is going to happen!!!! I'M SO HAPPY WITH MY FRICKIN' SHOW!!!!

In order of how much I wanted the following ... Katherine really just not that into Damon; and never really was. Again, obviously, there may be more to this, but the fact that they are putting this out there in the premiere lets me hope that they are doing so to get Damon onto the path of take her down, and take her down for good. To put the final nail in the coffin of the Damon/Katherine love story. (At least for a good while, LOL!) It seems likely that's where we're headed.

Also, the relationship between Katherine and Stefan is explored, with it being put out there that it's Stefan she wants; he's the one she loved. The opening scene of "Blood Brothers" where Stefan mixed up Elena and Katherine telling him "I love you," Katherine's lack of reaction to Damon's death, but clearly pained reaction to Stefan's got this ball rolling. Obviously, even with the little bit we've been given there is more to the story, but its just as obvious that we are going to get a good taste of at least this much. And we're most likely going to get signs that Stefan still has feelings for Katherine as well.

And then we have my top three ...

1.) Damon and Elena grow closer. Again, duh. Look at the source material and all of the promotion; it's GOT to happen. Not to mention, the actors and producers have essentially said it's going to happen.

2.) Damon and Alaric's budding BFF-ness continues. That was spoiled a month or so ago when Julie Plec said that the writers love writing for those two and there would be a lot more of that. So yay!

3.) Damon becomes the male figure in Jeremy's life. I honestly thought there was a very good chance that this was just a pipe dream, and that Jeremy (either as a vampire or real boy!) would continue to hate on Damon. But I really, really, really wanted to see Jeremy turn to Damon as a big brother of sorts. Part of why I wanted it is because it creates another tie between Elena and Damon, but more importantly because I love the idea that somewhere inside of him he misses being the big brother with the adoring younger brother. And with Jeremy, he could have another taste of that. And, frankly, Ian Somerhalder and Steven R. McQueen have played off of each very well in just their few scenes together (the "hot/weird" conversation playing video games, Damon's "oh, I'm so confused with all of my teenage feelings" taunting speech, and then going to Jeremy to give him a choice to forget -- both in "Founder's Day"). I want more.

And I just read this information from a reporter in a twitpic: Steven McQueen as he tells us how Damon will turn into a father figure for Jeremy... And, OH MY GOODNESS! I'm getting that TVD wish too.

The awesome can NOT be put into words. Just YES!!!

And with that, knowing I'm getting shades and variations on the five things I really wanted to see next season, I am going to attempt to go spoiler free. I know, very unlike me, but the reason I've gone so spoiler-heavy for all of my past shows is because I don't trust the producers, the writers, the direction of the story. I need to be prepared for what's coming. I trust the people behind this show; I have faith that whatever is coming will continue to be awesome. So, yeah, I'm going spoiler-free.

I want all the same things as you! I love the idea of Jeremy being a vamp and learning from Damon etc. Ian has amazing chemistry with everyone and I know he can pull off whatever the writers throw at him. It was so cute at the tvd panel that Ian choose Steve to play him!

I think this is going to be a really strong season of this show and I am so excited for it!
sometimes spoiler free can be nice, get surprised by what happens, and I know these writers will have lots of surprises in store for us.

I think that Jeremy being closer to Damon does point to him being a vampire, but with this show, I've learned to not expect the obvious, so who knows? LOL!

Yeah, I'm really, really looking forward to the season. They said that when they found out about the s2 pick-up they began brain-storming then, including putting small things/bits in the rest of s1 that would play out in s2. So, yeah, very excited!

I'm really looking forward to the fourth episode because I know pretty significant spoilers for the first three! EEK!

*FLAILS MORE* YES! Damon and Jeremy together is almost better than Alaric and Damon together. Seriously this show might end up spoiling me for all other shows ever simply because it somehow just gives me everything I could ever want.

And I officially know where that Joey/Pacey scene is from! (BTW: As of this moment, I'm on episode 13 of season four.)

I KNOW!! FLAILING WITH YOU! We so have to talk this weekend; I have more *other* news.

Absolutely agree with you on all points.

Do you post at Vampire-Diaries.net? Just curious.

Cool! :D

No, I haven't found a TVD place where I feel comfortable posting yet. Right now, I mostly post on the Nina/Ian comm, and the DE forum/Ian board at FanForum. I'm a member of the Damon/Elena comm, but don't post much there.

Can't wait to see more of Damon and Jeremy bonding, I think it will do Damon so good!

Also yes, finally some Stefan/Katherine will be explained because until now it was like almost completely skipped.

I would love to see Damon killing Katherine, it would do him good too :P It just pains me seeing Damon so utterly in love with her, and that scene in the promo where he pleads her for truth, just dbdfgsdhgsf! Seriously I sometimes miss Damon from the books, he was way better off without thinking Katherine is alive...

In general i don't even know - I'm still processing all the new things, but damn, the next season is gonna be so good, y/y? And I would love to stay spoiler free but then how would I suvrive the whole break without getting new information? That one's tough...

Me too; like I said in my op, I think that Damon really does miss the love/younger-sibling admiration that he got from Stefan. I think that he'd been able to keep some of that through the years it would have helped ground him more. So here's hoping that Jeremy can help Damon out in that respect. Actually, they'd be helping each other out.

Also yes, finally some Stefan/Katherine will be explained because until now it was like almost completely skipped.

Oh, I think that it has definitely been there. I don't feel like it was skipped personally, but more laying in wait. I keep going back to that opening scene in "Blood Brothers," Elena and Katherine merging in and out of one another in Stefan's mind; the "I love you" from both Katherine and Elena to him. Very, very interesting. I can't WAIT to see the exploration of Stefan and Katherine.

As for Damon, I'm really hoping that they are introducing the Katherine doesn't love Damon (never did) angle in the premiere so that we see Damon truly begin to get over her sooner rather than later, you know?

damn, the next season is gonna be so good, y/y?

A big, fat, honking YES!!

And I would love to stay spoiler free but then how would I suvrive the whole break without getting new information? That one's tough...

Thus my use of the word "attempt." I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it. I think it will depend on my reaction/pleasure to episodes I'm not spoiled about.

I like your wish list and it's so exciting that the show is going in those directions. I usually don't care for fanservice (mostly because you can't please everyone and it undermines your narrative if you are constantly changing things to please certain fanbases), but what I love about TVD is that it makes its fans happy without comprising the creators' overall vision for the story. The fan happy-making comes about in a very organic way.

I definitely want more Damon/Elena stuff, but I hope they don't rush it. Just last season Damon was snapping necks and ramming his fist into people's chests. His progression from villain to more of an anti-hero (and consequently, being closer with Elena) can't just happen overnight. I thought they played it well last season by softening him up a bit while maintaining his trademark snark. I liked that he seemed kind of confused about doing something good lol. I think this whole thing with Katherine will be very interesting for his character development and I hope we see him waffling between evil and (relatively) good.

I find it interesting that Katherine prefers Stefan to Damon. What I think it is is that Damon is easy; Damon was lovesick for her and was ready to do anything for her, so he wasn't much of a challenge. Stefan, on the other hand, would prove a more satisfactory conquest for her, both in the past and the present.

I don't even feel like this is fan-service. For me fan-service is when they throw stuff in the show JUST because fans clamor for it. But this is like you said; it's organic. This is stuff that has groundwork already in place for it, thus the show ITSELF set up expectation for these possibilities. And they are making fans happy (at least this one, and those who've responded here, LOL!) by logically following through with those set-ups. Again, DAMN!, I love my show.

I definitely want more Damon/Elena stuff, but I hope they don't rush it.

I don't think they will. Julie Plec has said countless times that it's going to take time to get Damon and Elena to a place where viewers will buy that Elena chooses (not just IS, but chooses) to be in love with Damon.

I think this whole thing with Katherine will be very interesting for his character development and I hope we see him waffling between evil and (relatively) good.

I agree, and I do think that's what we will see re: Damon. :)

i also agree that part of Katherine's preference for Stefan is due to the challenge, but I think it's more. It could be the Stefan/Katherine shipper in me coming to the fore, but I do believe that if she's genuinely capable of feeling anything remotely like love, that it's for Stefan that she feels it.

Katherine really just not that into Damon; and never really was.

Eeeee! Oh, I wanted this too, mostly for the same reason - I really want Damon to take her down with prejudice. :-D

Also, I really love the rest of these wants, too, so I'm so glad you were prescient! Is it September yet?

I don't need him to stake her necessarily, but I do want there to come some point in the season where Damon has to clearly choose between Katherine and Elena. And he chooses Elena. Partly because of the squeeful reaction my Damon/Elena shipper will have, but also because MAN! would it piss Katherine off so much, LOL!

I genuinely believe that this is a case where if you watch the show carefully, pay attention to beats and the reasons why behind the maneuvering, the placement, the pacing of certain scenes/arcs, you can see a broad idea of certain aspects of the story and character and where they are going. Obviously not enough to get the twists and turns, but that has nothing to do with emotional, character continuity. Those beats do, and this show has done an EXCELLENT job of laying those beats down and following through. To which I say: YAY!

I agree with all of your list.

After re-watching "Let the Right One In" last night, I really do love the possibility of a bromance between Alaric and Damon. Just the scene of them at the bar where Damon goes "You have to admit, we were BAD. ASS!" was great. Especially when Alaric punches him in the face and Damon goes "It happens."

I also like the idea of him + Jeremy bonding. When I started watching the show, I was Team Stefan (even though I hate the Team lingo) all the way. I thought Damon was prettier, but I liked Stefan. About halfway through the season, I switched to the dark side and planted myself in Team Damon camp. Right around the time we started seeing some of Damon's humanity coming through. I grew to love it when he would go from being a decent guy to being a shit at the drop of a hat. Cuz c'mon, Naughty Damon is damn sexy. ;)

It's been a long time since I was into a show as much as I'm into TVD. The last time I was as excited about a new season as I am with TVD was probably Lost. Which, ironically, our boy was a part of. I am eagerly awaiting the season premiere, and am just as excited for S1 to come out on DVD. And I almost stopped watching after the 2nd or 3rd episode because I just wasn't feeling it. So glad I stuck with it, because it went from MEH. to AWESOME pretty damn quick.

Oh, that's such a fabulous scene. But so many of their scenes are fabulous. I love that as more press came out at Comic Con, there was bits of discussion with Ian and Matt Davis about Damon/Alaric, and based on their interpretation of what's happening, it's TOTALLY going to be a bromance. WOOHOO!

I started watching it already liking Ian Somerhalder, and expecting to root for Damon/Elena. I knew Paul Wesley from a soap he did way back when he was still Paul Wasilewski, LOL! I was surprised that I DID like Stefan and thought that Stefan/Elena were cute for the most part. But my heart quickly belonged to Damon, and eventually Damon/Elena, and now I'm just completely obsessed with Ian, Damon, Damon/Elena SO MUCH. When you get to my five favorite characters post you'll see that!

I watched the first ep, stopped about 40 minutes in and was like meh, but then some friends convinced me to try it out again in early May. Up until episode four, I was questioning why I was giving this a shot, and then somewhere during that ep, I realized I wasn't questioning it. Episode six came, then seven and on and on and I was just BOWLED OVER. I can't even remember the last time I was this COMPLETELY into a show; I think maybe X-Files?! But with that show, I had issues with certain aspects of it. The Vampire Diaries, oh my goodness, I absolutely love everything about it. SO MUCH!
