Doctor Who S5 watch
I wanted to thank you all for giving your two cents about watching the new season. I haven't responded yet because I've still been going back and forth, but based on what I've heard of the last ep of this season, I won't. Moff went somewhere really not unexpected but still just not for me. Ah well, I would've liked to see Matt Smith/Eleven and Rory, but I have other fandoms that I'm happily obsessed with that won't gut me (as of now), I'll just stick with those.

ETA: Or not. I've been convinced to watch it. I know, I know, I'm so weak. But without Rose there, I figure that maybe I won't do my uber-obsessive analysis and can just enjoy it. We'll see. And, yeah, butterfly, I'll let you know. :)

What about the finale is bothering you?

I don't want to spoil for anyone who hasn't had a chance to watch yet, but a certain relationship made clear. It was ambiguous enough pre-s5, and had remained so to a degree based on what I've read, but this ended it. I honestly don't think I would have minded had this particular character been introduced in s5, but as they were and *when* they were, no, I just can't erase the icky connections there. And, again, I have other fandoms that aren't bugging me right now, but rather filling me with joy. Don't need Moff.

Oh, no! You should give it a try! Really! I'm as staunch and stubborn a Rose-fan and Doctor/Rose shipper as you'll ever, ever encounter, and I still think you should give S5 a try. At the least, let me recommend which episodes are safest! I mean, really. You need Amelia Pond in your life and you need to see “Vincent and the Doctor”!

As for the relationship you referred to? Well, like I said, I'm a stubborn, stubborn little Doctor/Rose shipper (and even if the powers that be worm their pretty little ways around the twelve regenerations cap, I'll be shipping the Fiftieth Doctor/Rose Tyler when I'm old and senile) so you should bear that in mind when I say: It's not that bad. Really and truly! I still resent the way she was introduce, I still resent the heavy, shameless implications, and I spent many, many moments of discussion vowing to hate her forever and ever, amen.

But here's the thing: There are moments where she's really, really awesome. Enough so that I came out of S5 liking her.

Here's the other thing: If she had NOT been introduced the way she was in S4, or if I had watched S5 before watching S4, I would be shipping it right now. It's not my favorite thing, not by far, but it's growing on me.

But, but, but ... you suck! Cuz I totally trust your judgment on this. Damnit, I'm trying to be strong. I had made up my mind. Ugh! What do do!!

And I do love Alex Kingston. GAH! Okay, I'll think on it more.

ETA: I'm dling it. We'll see.

I also like Rose/Doctor, but why can't a man who lives as long as the Doctor does love more than one person and have more than one relationship? 0_o I mean, he had a granddaughter, so he definitely had a romantic relationship before Rose came along (and let's not forget his feelings for Romana)... I don't see what's so bad about him having one after, especially since he's had to accept his alter-self is in another dimension having that relationship in his stead.

Not that I really like the relationship alluded to in this conversation, however. Not a fan of that ship so far, not at all.

Also, I hope this comment isn't coming across as in any way combative! I'm just sincerely confused by how Rose/Doctor would render all other relationships undesirable given the life span and biology involved.

I think you're misunderstanding my meaning. I was simply explaining that as someone who ships Doctor/Rose ABOVE all other Doctor Who pairings, I understood where she was coming from. I know perfectly well that there were women before Rose, and I ship the Doctor with people other than Rose, but the ship in question was rather...boisterously presented before Doctor/Rose had closure. I think that's why many Doctor/Rose shippers have an issue with it.

Really, I understand that there were pairings before and there are going to be pairings after. The way I portrayed my love for Doctor/Rose in my original comment was intended to ensure Jen that she would be okay if she watched S5. I apologize if I came off as one-ship only, but that was far from my point and that's far from who I am.

In short, my comment was intended as one of empathy and encouragement, not a statement against any pairing besides Doctor/Rose.

And it worked.

Seriously, ladyofjest. Jess knows me and my shipping style very well, she hit the exact mark needed to get me considering a watch of S5. I'm so one of those annoying shippers, LOL! I get and understand that the Doctor had/will have other loves, I just want Rose to be number one!

THIS!

:) Basically, I ship the Doctor all over his fandom, but I wanted you to know that S5 is an okay place for the people who don't.

Well, I'm gonna give it a shot. We'll see.

Awesome! Like I said, I didn't mean to be combative. Thanks for the thoughtful reply!

Oh, that. I don't think Moff will actually go that route, and the answer from one person was very vague for exactly that reason (never ask an or question.)

Hmm. See now all of your responses have me torn again.

The way it plays out, you really don't know which of the two questions is being answered, so I wouldn't worry.

There's also the part where it's going to influence their collective timeline later. I'm more than a little intrigued by that.

Gah, I don't know. See I'm so into TVD right now, and my heart was obsessed/crazy over Doctor/Rose, and with them not there, maybe I can just watch it without the OMG!OBSESS!ANALYZE! everything. I loved Moff's eps *before* I rewatched and analyzed, seeing all of the plot holes and misogyny. So, I dunno.

See, I'm torn again.

ETA: Okay, untorn. I'm giving it a shot.

I saw this yesterday, and I had meant to come back and write a big long comment about how S5 is just so absolutely well-crafted and magnificent and awesome. Ten and Rose are still my favorite Doctor and companion (and ship), but goddamn, if Eleven and Amy Pond and Rory aren't just absolutely fantastic. :)

But I guess I don't have to! You decided to watch it! Yay. :D I hope it goes well because I really want everyone to like it. It's that good. (And I agree with whoever it was that commented and said they hate River, but they didn't mind her as much this season. Very true. I really don't like River or the idea of River, and yet? She's awesome in this season.)

And at the very least, if you decide you can't handle it, spoil yourself for the end of the second two parter (The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood) and watch Vincent and the Doctor. It's worth it.
Arabian: Rose_Thinkingarabian on June 27th, 2010 08:53 pm (UTC)
If I decide that it's just not working for me, I promise I will at least watch Vincent and the Doctor because I've heard nothing but AAAHHHH! raves about it.
