True Blood - watched the whole show so far ...
Take a look at my icon, and I dare *anyone* on my flist to tell me they are surprised. Seriously, I dare you! Okay, so per my usual, random thoughts behind the cut. (And I really, really do not think this will be long. For reals. I was wrong, but so not as long as I normally write, so go me!)

BACKGROUND on my watching/CURRENT THOUGHTS

I watched this when it first premiered because I'm a huge Anna Paquin fan. I've seen almost all of her films, and I generally love her to bits. So I watched this. And discovered after a few episodes, an utter and visceral dislike for Stephen Moyer (Bill) as an actor. I'm sure he's a lovely, lovely fellow in real life, after all Anna Paquin is engaged to him, and Anna Paquin is awesome, I can't believe that she would date, let alone become engaged, to a non-lovely, lovely fellow. But, dear Lord, I could not stand him on screen. So I stopped watching after the first three episodes.

And then I kept seeing random Alexander Skarsgård is the hottest thing ever, and Eric and Sookie are *the* couple, and blah to Bill and Sookie. I also read bitchings and random spoilers, so I've been well aware of what I'd be getting into should I ever decide to give the show a chance again. But did I listen? No, I decided to give the show a chance again.

The good news it that I no longer viscerally detest Stephen Moyer. I think I built up my dislike of his performance-skills so much that seeing it again, he wasn't nearly as awful as I remembered. He's mildly good-looking, but MY GOD! that vampire make-up is utterly dreadful on him. It makes him look about ten years older than he is. Not. a. good. look. He's a passable actor, with limited charisma. But he's not bad; he's not awful. So there's that.

The show overall? It's hot-boiler eh, saved by awesome actors and the crazy. That pretty much sums it up.

CHARACTERS

Long section made really short? But for Bill, all the characters are pretty awesome! But what fun is short?

Sookie: She's awesome. Screw the haters, I LOVE Paquin, and I love her Sookie, period. I love her innocence, paired with her temper. I love her sass and passion, her morals and her good heart. She. is. awesome.

Bill: On the other hand? He. is. not. Seriously, out of every vampire story I've ever read, Vampire Bill easily wins the category of most boring, annoying vampire EVER! Now were Stephen Moyer a great actor, really good-looking or insanely charismatic, able to turn the most ordinary of lines into awesome-sauce (ahem, see Alexander Skarsgård), Bill would work. The gorgeous, charismatic, beautifully performed Bill would be a noble hero of the highest order. You would root for him to keep his hard-fought for humanity, alternately cheer/mourn when his vampirism got the better of him, and sigh and squee over his relationship with Sookie. But when the actor is (sorry) Moyer, a passable, reasonably attractive, barely charismatic actor? You're pretty much screwed and left with THE. MOST. BORING. ANNOYING. VAMPIRE. EVER!!!!!!

Tara: After the first season, Tara was actually my favorite character, but she lost some of her luster due to the storyline in season two, but I still like her. She's so fucked up, and so honest with everyone but herself (for the most part). I feel bad for her because of Eggs, but I can't help it, I still want her and Sam to make it. I doubt it will happen, but I have a soft spot in my heart for them.

Lafayette: His is the character I think they've done the most with, and oh so interesting. Nelsan Ellis has done a great job in showing the depth behind the character. He's my third favorite character overall.

Eric: He's awesome. He's the kind of vampire that should be written as the frickin' lead vampire for once. Fun, snarky, evil, but not too evil, just awesome! And he's so big and tall and masculine and yummy! Skarsgård's done a great job with so little.

Jason: What a dumbass! But he provided one of my favorite lines: "I love the smell of nail polish in the morning!" (LMAO!) Really interesting character growth for him as well. He's not a favorite, but I appreciate his place on the show and Ryan Kwanten does a good job with the character.

Sam: I like the character, and actor, but overall he's just kinda ... there.

Maryann: I will always worship at the altar of Michelle Forbes' awesomeness. No exception to this role. I just wish she wasn't playing the big bad in season two, thus departing. She deserves to be a big star, she is AMAZING, and has been since she kicked ass as Sonni/Solita on Guiding Light years ago.

Jessica: She's another one who's just awesome. And Deborah Ann Woll is doing a lovely job. And she's the only character who doesn't make Bill look so fucking annoying as shit. His bad parenting is amusing.

ETA: Meant to list my favorite characters in order (only characters we see often enough, not recurring/gone like the Queen or Maryann):

- Sookie
- Eric
- Layfayette
- Tara
- Jessica
- Jason
- Andy
- Sam
- Arlene
- Pam
- Terry
- Hoyt (although, I wasn't happy with what he said to his mom at the end, no matter her issues, she's still loved and raised him on her own after her husband shot himself)
- Sheriff Bud

- Eh, fine, Bill

SHIPS

So, yeah, I do ship Eric and Sookie. I'm not psychotically into them (hello Sheldon/Penny!), but they are hot, totally have chemistry and *should* be the it couple. Oh, Alan Ball, you are your never-ending hard-on for the utterly lame-ass Bill. Sigh.

I also mini-ship Tara and Sam, but I'm not holding out any hope there. You'd think I'd ship Tara/Jason due to the backstory, but I just haven't seen enough of them in any kind of real romantic, even sexual situation to get a feel for them as a pair. As of now? Nah.

OVERALL

I'm not expecting any great television here, and I'm not expecting even a remotely happy ending for Eric and Sookie, but I'm going to enjoy what we get. :shrugs:

I JUST finished watching season 1 and 2 within 3 days and adored it. I agree with everything you said though I like Sam better then you do. And yeah, it's ALL about Sooki/Eric. Hot and interesting couple.

Now I can't wait until June!!

As far as Bill/Sookie goes I'm hoping they stick to the books and I'm not a huge fan of the books.

I didn't really get into True Blood until season 2 the more Eric screen time the more I liked it and Eric/Sookie...whoa hot! The more of Bill's inept parenting the better imo, watching a 100+ vampire try to raise his first child without the secrecy he was brought up in is so much more interesting than the typical controlling, over protective boyfriend.

The Bill/Jessica scenes are pure gold. The Bill/anyone else scenes? Not so much. Not even the Bill/Eric scenes simply because it's almost embarrassing how much Eric pwns Bill!

I am also for Eric/Sookie. I started off by reading the books, liked the first well enough, but got stuck mid-way through the second because I had Bill issues. So I put that series aside for years until I heard rumors of Eric/Sookie and gave it another shot. And enjoyed it. As for the show, I've really enjoyed what Eric/Sookie we've gotten so far, and liked show!Bill marginally better than book!Bill, but only marginally. And not with Sookie. I hope we don't have to put up with too much Bill/Sookie in Season 3 of the show.

I haven't read the books because I've heard that Eric is much better, and Bill is not the be-all and end-all of the universe as he is in the series, and I don't want the much more awesome in the books to overwhelm the series. I figure it has 3-4 more seasons left (if that) and then it's done, so I'll read the books then.
Beck: True Blood - Sookie/Ericbeck_liz on April 24th, 2010 01:48 pm (UTC)
S'ok. I'm not always the best at replying to comments myself. :-)

As to the books, well... Bill isn't the be-all and end-all once you get past book 3 or 4, but you have to get through that first in order to get there. And Sookie goes through another relationship before getting to Eric. Well, sort of. I won't say any more than that. But I understand about not wanting to read the books and having them conflict with the series. For as much as I like some things in the series better than the books, there are other things where I'm all, "WHAT? You left that out? WHY?" *snerk*

LOL LOL. This whole post made me laugh so much, haha. I picked up the series randomly and even though it is crack, it is still kind of brilliant crack.

I didn't mind Bill so much at first, but I got kind of tired of him and Sookie repeating the same arguments over and over again about trust. I can see why people have turned from Sookie/Bill to Sookie/Eric so quickly, but overall, True Blood is a show I don't really ship in. Which is kind of shocking because I usually ship in everything I watch, even if it is only the canon.

That said, I used to watch a show that Stephen Moyer was in called NY-LON where he got to use his own accent and he was pretty charming in that. *shrugs*

I love Anna Paquin, my little Kiwi girl ♥

I admit, I kind of love Jason Stackhouse. I find him endlessly hilarious and I love the way Ryan plays him. I remember Ryan from one of the Aussie soaps he was on, and his character was hilarious in that too. I also really like Jessica and Hoyt, and I don't care much about Tara, and I didn't like the MaryAnn storyline at all.

But I do like the show. I read the first book, and Bill doesn't come across so badly in that, but even the books in the series take an Eric/Sookie turn I think? I don't know. I need to get around to reading the rest sometime.

I read the books before the show, and Bill was always one of my least favorite characters. Neither Stephen Moyer nor the writing changed my mind. In the later books, he tends to be far less of a main character, though, so here's hoping they follow that trend.

This show is just pure. camp. And that's what I love about it. It's fun and fucked up and it's not posing to be anything else, which makes it awesome.

And yes, I spend most of each ep LOLZing at Vampire Bill. And I spent the last portion of S2 being gobsmacked by Sookie/Eric. HAI CHEMISTRY MUCH?

Not the greatest show in the world, but it's fun, and I have fallen in love with Alex Skarsgård so I am hooked lol!

I read the books first, so I went into the series shipping Sookie/Eric, but the show killed pretty much any love I have for Bill as a character. I just find he is so bloody dull on the show, so thank goodness that the other characters are interesting enough to make up for it.

I am not obsessed with the ship of Eric/Sookie...yet. I have a feeling that as the series goes on and (hopefully) Eric and Sookie's scenes become more intense my love for them will probably grow. But yeah, I don't have hope for a happy ending for them either but on this type of show I'm not sure that is necessary. As long I get something, and it's not a complete Bill love fest.

Yeah, probably, but I've been so sucked into the other vampire show (The Vampire Diaries) which is actually a rather brilliant show and they seem to be pushing the non-OTP couple much more than TB does. Still, I don't count Eric/Sookie out.

SWEET! Agree w/everything!! (Except I do psychotically ship Eric & Sookie, LOL) and I've read all the books (the Sookie-Eric relationship is even better in the books, where Bill is barely there after a certain point). I don't mind any of the changes or additions the show has made, except in regards to Eric's character.

That's actually why I don't want to read the books right now; based on all I've heard, I'll be very disappointed. I'll probably read them if (a) I do get totally obsessed, and (b) when the show ends, that way I know what will never happen versus the books because the show is over.
gowdiegowdie on March 3rd, 2010 04:48 am (UTC)
Here's the weird thing - I actually think Stephen Moyer does a good job of playing Bill - the problem is the character of Bill is exceedingly dull. That's who he is. Bill is a boring vampire. And the show actually makes him more interesting than the books with adding the Jessica storyline - it adds the layers of very boring straight laced Bill having to deal with teenage vampire rebellion, and the result is hilarious. So I'm not sure the fault lies with Moyer - he is doing his job. It's the character that's so meh.

Eric, on the other hand, he's the hilarious awesome vampire that loves being a vampire, and loves to drive Sookie crazy just because it's so damn funny. I adore Eric. And Skarsgard is brilliant in the role. I watched the two seasons first, and am now working my way through the books - and I hear everything Eric says in Skarsgard's voice - and it's perfect.

So far the show isn't including all the same Eric stuff - but Eric is absolutely the right character. And the show is giving him different stuff to do instead. So while book two developed the Eric/Sookie dynamic in very interesting ways, the show gave us the Eric/Goderic storyline - which is equally as good, just different.

I am loving the books. Seriously, if you love Eric/Sookie, I think you'll love the books. Every other character is no where near as developed as on the show - but Sookie is the same hilarious and awesome girl, and there is a lot of Eric. The thing about the books is, they are entirely Sookie's POV - so while the show can give you a full storyline about Tara or Jason or Sam, the books can't and don't. So it's light for everyone else, and all Sookie all the time.

As I told leosgreens, I don't want to read the books right now; based on all I've heard, I'll be very disappointed. I'll probably read them if (a) I do get totally obsessed, and (b) when the show ends, that way I know what will never happen versus the books because the show is over. I do intend to read them eventually (and actually would have already because my sister had suggested them three years ago, but the first book was missing), but based on all I've heard, I'm just afraid I'll get so irritated with what we're not getting re: Eric and Eric/Sookie.

As for Bill, I dunno, I didn't find Bill so annoyingly boring until the sixth or seventh episode when it just became so same ole, same ole. But I stopped watching TB the first time around after the third episode simply because I could not stand Moyer. Frankly, I think (with that makeup), he actually DOES look like the walking dead ... and in the worst way possible. Just yuck. But I do enjoy the bad parenting, so that's at least something.

Not reading the books just yet is probably a good idea. I saw the first season before I read the books, so season 2 starting bugging me with the Eric things they changed. But if season 4 could mirror book 4, we Eric/Sookie shippers would be so very happy!!

Aww, I'm sorry. If you like the vampire motif though, you should check out The Vampire Diaries. It started out like a Dawson's Creek with Vampires!, but after about four episodes it became so much more and is just a weekly dose of awesome now. And I love all of the characters.

Yay, you like Eric/Sookie, too! They're my favorite as well, although yeah, I'm not psychotically into them or anything. My thoughts on the show pretty much mirror yours (I just watched the whole show this past fall) except I like Sam quite a bit. I didn't at first, but over time I really came to like him. I also love Lafayette, agree about Tara losing some of her luster during S2, and although I like the actress, the character Maryann got on my nerves after awhile.

Yeah, I agree that it's not great television, but it's addictive. Definitely a guilty pleasure kind of show. I'm eagerly awaiting S3.

ETA: I also like Hoyt/Jessica, and of course Bill gets on my nerves. In some situations he's fine (with Jessica, doing stuff like playing Wii, getting pwned by Eric) but normally he gets on my nerves and I wish he wasn't with Sookie.

I've wandered over. Hiya! Sorry to hear you're not feeling well in your real life but I'm glad you're trying out this show. I actually read the books first so I don't find much to love on the show. If you love Eric and want him to be the lead, I suggest you try the books. He is definitely more of a lead there then I feel he'll ever be on the show. It's arguable who is the biggest male character because the books are really more about Sookie than a particular man (the show is more about the relationship between Bill and Sookie, blegh). Eric definitely gets a lot more attention though and you may be miffed by things that shoulda could been in season one/two and were not.

What I do love about the show is that we get to experience the perspective from other characters. It's nice to see Eric in scenes where Sookie is not present to misinterpret. It's also nice to see him in full on vamp mode because many of the vampires, for obvious reasons, dont' show their full brutal side in front of Sookie since they want to use her for their own purposes in the future. I think we get to see awesome things on the show that we haven't seen described as vividly in the other medium (like that totally awesome scene when Eric ripped that guy in half like he was a twinkie).

I confess, I don't love Sookie to the same degree I love Eric. But she's more annoying when around Bill. I actually enjoy her when she's working with Eric, probably because the dreamy-love-struck-and-self-centred Sookie is the one that bugs me...but everyone can be like that when in love.

I love what the show has done with Lafayette mostly. They made great choices there. I thought Tara and Sam were good together because the relationship was so different to others so far displayed. It kind of died when I experienced I giant bout of distaste for the massacre of the season two storyline (I'm perverted by how much better the second book was and how random a lot of the stuff on the show was, I think so,...hmm). Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed...aspects. But mostly was wtfing. The one part of the show I really, truly enjoyed was Jessica/Hoyt. It was very different from other relationships and I just want to rough up Hoyt's hair and huggle him all day long. Adorable, gentlemanly guy. I actually find him more of a southern gentleman then Bill (probably in the minority but whatev). Bill can sometimes be really smug about his traditional manners (see final proposal/date scenes with the weird smirk) whereas Hoyt seems sweet and unassuming about it.

Eric and Sookie are VERY hot. In the books. And the flashbacks. They totally won't touch that in a way I think I'll be pleased with on the show. But I have to say that just watching Alexander Skarsgard being naked and rubbing against Sookie in any capacity pleases me. I'll just ignore the context as best I can and slot those visuals into my readings of the books. lol :)

I am surprised by how much I'm enjoying Ryan Kwanten as Jason. He's an Australian and I know him from Aussie soaps which were...terrible, in a word. I actually cringed when I saw he was cast. But even though the character is a dumbass, I can't imagine anyone else as Jason now. I'm actually surprised by how impressed I am by his portryal of that kind of white trash, sexually overloaded dumbass. He can make a really unlikable character sympathetic at times and I do roll my eyes at him like he's adorable idiot cousin I have to protect from himself. Kudos, Ryan, you changed my mind about you as an actor (even pulling off the accent...mostly...though part of the fun is picking out the moments when the aussie accent slips through, should be a drinking game!!).

I hope you feel better in the future, hun. Glad you're on board for the pervy Eric ride. :)

Ryan Kwanten, I know only from this show, but he's become someone I appreciate and like a lot more than I ever thought I would based on the first episode.

If you haven't checked out The Vampire Diaries, you should try it. The first three or so episodes play more like Dawson's Creek with vampires, but around ep four or five it becomes richer, deeper and just all-around incredibly awesome.

Bill is basically a Mary-Sue-ish vampire. He can do no wrong, always saves the day, and is just so whining and boring. That's why I don't like him. And with Bill and Sookie, it annoys me that they're selling them as some great love story when her infatuation was based on the blood to begin with, and we've seen nothing that explains that it's BILL that made her fall in love. And all they do is fight about the same thing, have sex, and then fight, have sex, fight, have sex. That's why I don't like them. I don't know what the problem is for others.

I do know you're not the only one, I've read others liking him and them, and hey, Alan Ball loves 'em and that's way key!

I just watch it and try to enjoy it without thinking too much about it. My ship is Sheldon/Penny! <3

Yeah. Pretty much me too.

I'm sorry.

Needs more spaces.

I did the same thing you did in the same week! Great minds think alike! Anyway, I'm reading the books so far and it immediately feels the gap for E/S for me on the show. I still love the show as it self but I still think the books are better. I'm not trying to tempt you into it. I'm just saying. I love the writing in these books.

E/S FTW! I'm happy to see you like this ship too! XD

Sorry for the late reply.

E/S FTW! I'm happy to see you like this ship too! XD

Ah, we ship so much in common, LOL!

Saw this link on your Twitter and even though it's a month later, I'm going to respond anyway.

The good news it that I no longer viscerally detest Stephen Moyer. I think I built up my dislike of his performance-skills so much that seeing it again, he wasn't nearly as awful as I remembered.

I first saw Stephen in The Starter Wife the USA miniseries. And goodness his character was annoying and dull. And it pissed me off that she went with him over the more interesting character played by Joe Montegna. I was glad when they did the series only because it meant Stephen's character was gone.

What I'm basically saying is that I dreaded True Blood because of that but found Bill to be a vastly superior character. Yes, that's what I said. Bill is much better than what Stephen previously played. I like SM and I think he plays Bill well, but I don't think he has had a breakout role yet. Eric is a lot of fun and AS plays him perfectly.

That said, i don't know if I'm on one particular ship for Sookie. I wouldn't mind her ping ponging between "good" and "evil."

I also mini-ship Tara and Sam, but I'm not holding out any hope there.

I could psychotically ship these two but I don't hold out much hope either. I liked them because they were so different and pretty much fell into something. And were terrible at it. It was so messy and real. They totally had me at Sam's "If we're going to do this, we're going to do this." Oh well, maybe in later seasons they'll revisit these two.

Eh, don't feel bad, I completely forgot the responses here that I thought I'd responded to, but erm, did not, so I'm running late too. :(

I've heard that Moyer was better in other stuff, this is the first time I've read that he was worse, LOL!

I don't think I could every crazy ship them (not enough chemistry, although they do have some for sure), but I do like them, and for all the reasons you said. What I like about them IS the writing that you've mentioned. And, yeah, maybe down the road .....
