American Idol & Top Chef ... lalalalaa
Some thoughts on American Idol. I'm really bummed that stupid bikini girl likely helped in taking Rose Flack out. Yes, yes, she forgot the lyrics a bit and that was why, but dangit, I can't help but blame stupid Katrina. I know that Rose wasn't the best singer, but she made me FEEL something and I really liked her. Oh well. As for Jasmine Murray -- who was also in that group -- for the first time, I liked how she sounded likely because for the first time she didn't sound like she was singing through her nose.

Still liking Anne Marie Boskovich and I'm glad she made it through. I'm also happy that Nick Mitchell (aka Norman Gentle) made it through. I wish we heard him, but at least he made it through another day.

And, sadly, I've found the one they are going to slobber over that I don't like: Adam Lambert. I'm sorry, he can sing, yes, but he sounds like a girl and I just, I don't like him. But I can already tell he'll make it through with flying colors and he's going to be super-duper popular. I don't know, maybe I'll change my mind. It's happened before.

Top Chef -- I can't believe they sent Jaime home over Leah. Honestly, the only thing I can guess from that is that something more is going on with Leah and Hosea? Because even NOT taking into account the previous weeks, just this dish -- Jaime knew what she did wrong, but couldn't fix it because of time contstraints. Given fifteen more minutes, she would have corrected the dish, whereas, Leah's would still have been wrong. I just, dunno. I do not know.

I'm resigned to Stefan winning now, but he IS a great chef clearly, so that's fine. Going back a few seasons, while I really, really wanted Sam to win because I lurved him, I would have been fine with him NOT winning had a clearly superior chef won. Not only did a superior chef not win, neither Ilan nor Marcel were close to Sam in talent and THAT'S what pissed me off. They kept the drama over the talent. And that's partially why I'm frustrated with Jeff over Fabio, because Jeff, based on ALL we've seen, is a superior chef to Fabio. And this episode, Jaime is CLEARLY a superior chef to Leah. Gah.

What I am happy about is Carla's turn-around. I was cracking up with her during the quickfire challenge, and then she kicked ass in the main challenge, more than Fabio (and I wish the judges had made that more obvious) hitting the challenge. Based on the comments we heard in relation TO the challenge, it was Stefan and Carla and that was it. Fabio's dish was great, but it wasn't Ripert's dish. Stefan and *Carla* hit the mark much closer. Still, I like seeing her up there in the winning circle and I am tentatively hoping that she'll make it top four, maybe even top three!!! :D :D

Top Chef. I love that show! I can't believe that Jamie was sent home! That totally sucks because, IMO, she is a way better chef than Leah who totally sucked this episode. From the very beginning in the Quickfire where she gave up to her elimination dish. Besides that, she has not been a strong contender in the entire series.

I'm rooting for Carla too. She's hitting her stride and it's wonderful to see. I'm predicting that it will be Stefan, Fabio and, hopefully, Carla in the final 3. Leah and Hosea just aren't that impressive.

Yup!

I love Carla!!! I do think it will be Hosea over Fabio in the final three actually because Hosea's come close a lot in terms of his dishes, where as Fabio is generally in the middle. But his personality is great and he can cook, so maybe!

That's the one thing I don't like about Top Chef, it's always based on that one dish and not how they've done before. I was sure they were going to send Leah home because she just gave up during the quickfire.
Arabianarabian on February 6th, 2009 01:31 am (UTC)
See, that's the thing this time that made no sense; it really seemed (based on the comments) that with regards to this one dish, Leah's was worse overall. Stupid show.

I'm hoping that Carla makes it too. I don't think anyone can beat Stefan at this point but I am hopeful that at least one of my favorites will make the finals.

I do not understand in the least how Jamie was kept over Leah the lame. I read Colichio's blog and he's all Jamie's dish sucked the worse but still. Leah quit the quickfire and was in the bottom. To me that's a ticket to a booting.
Arabian: Deanarabian on February 6th, 2009 01:32 am (UTC)
Yeah, Stefan is so winning, but I'm too hoping Carla is in the final. I love her so.

I can not fathom Jaime going over Leah, I'm with you. I know, I know.

ITA with this. I can't believe she had the nerve to show up at the performance after quitting on her team. (heh, that was a reality theme last night, wasn't it? :/ ) I think Rose might've been in over her head, and probably wouldn't have survived to top 36, but the way she went out was just awful. :(

(I thought about you when I heard Jasmine sing...I thought she did sound better tonight, but I couldn't tell if she was still nasal or not :)

I'm sorry, he can sing, yes, but he sounds like a girl and I just, I don't like him.

I'd never heard him before, so hearing him last night, he was like the embodiment of "loud is the new good." Seriously, it was like "SETTLE DOWN, BUDDY -- I can't hear myself think!!" If he approaches every song with an energy level of 11, he's going to get very tiresome very soon.

Not only did a superior chef not win, neither Ilan nor Marcel were close to Sam in talent and THAT'S what pissed me off. They kept the drama over the talent.

Excellent point. This season feels very similar to S2 in that respect, which isn't a good thing. You know they'll have to have a girl in F3, and I'm just praying it's Carla and not Leah.

She doesn't even bring the drama anymore, now that she and Hosea aren't hooking up, so...why? :x
Arabian: TVarabian on February 6th, 2009 01:34 am (UTC)
Yeah, Rose may not have lasted, but to go because bikini girl!?!? UGH! Just, UGH!!!!

RE: Lambert. See, I thought you'd heard him in the auditions and so thought we'd be agreeing to disagreeing on him.

Please let Carla be in the top 3, please, please, please!!!

Once again, all we have to go on in TC is what we are shown. We can't taste the dishes, we can't compare, and I doubt, even if we could try them, we would be able to judge. What with not having those finely-honed pallets. Presumably, all the people who make it onto the show to begin with are excellent chefs. They wouldn't take some mediocre grill jokey. But starting with that, all we have to go on is what they show us. And the way they structure the episodes. Which is why, based on what we have seen, some of the judges' decisions are mind-boggling.

I have yet to see Leah do anything that would convince me she belongs on the show still. And certainly, the judges see and taste a lot more than we do, that's a given, but why, if she does deserve to stay, haven't we seen a clear indication? She should have gone home after the restaurant challenge. She should have gone home yesterday. I get that we aren't seeing everything, and, for all we know, Jamie's dish was so god-awful they couldn't get past that, but that's not how it was presented. Based on what they do show us, Leah doesn't belong. She falls apart, she seems clueless, and she constantly turns in inferior dishes. It's a bit of a head-scratcher that they keep giving her more chances. Ditto for Fabio over Jeff. Agree with you about Stefan, too. I may not like his personality, but from what we are shown, he is a superior chef, and that's fine.
Arabian: Logan_Hiarabian on February 6th, 2009 01:35 am (UTC)
Exactly. Based on ALL we've seen, not just tonight, but from the beginning, with a few exceptions, Leah has scraped by while Jaime has shone and shone and shone.

Just word. So. Much. Word.

My favorite part of last night's AI was seeing Megan Corkery asking to join the group Casey Carlson was in! They're just two of my favorite girls. Too bad the show was too wrapped up in the Bikini Girl drama and with the craziness of Tatiana.

Re: Adam Lambert. There's another guy you'll probably dislike more and his name is Von Smith. Now that's shouting, not singing, although Adam can tone it down a couple of notches too. At least with him, he sounds good while Von doesn't. I fear that Von will make top 12, urgh.
Arabian: Apolianne_Reunitedarabian on February 6th, 2009 01:37 am (UTC)
No, I like Von Smith. Every one they've spotlighted I'm familiar with (even if I haven't mentioned them, although I have mentioned him). I'm just going to have to disagree with you between Adam and Von. Von's voice -- IF he can tone it down -- I like. I think he sounds good, of course, I think he has a Broadway voice and I love Broadway voices. Adam just sounds girly and screamy to me. If Von can tone it down, yeah, he's good. Adam? At this point, just no.

Totally jumping in...

That makes me chuckle, since Adam was in Wicked in LA (and from what I've heard was pretty good).

I'm fairly ambivalent about both so far. Adam was too loud last night, Von was too showy the night before. I think they could both be good if they tone it down, but I need more to go on before I make up my mind one way or another.
Arabian: Idinaarabian on February 6th, 2009 05:26 am (UTC)
I know he was in Wicked in LA, but hearing him sing in Hollywood just reminded me that Sebastian Bach of Skid Row was in Jekyll & Hyde on Broadway. Just because someone is in a Bway show doesn't make them a Bway singer. Von HAS a Bway voice, he needs to tone it down. Lambert has a girly, screamy voice that is loud and thus allows him to do Bway type of songs. I just don't like that type of singing.

Both need to tone it down. Of the two though, based on what I've heard of their voices thus far, were Von to tone it down, I'd have a chance of liking him. Adam's voice so far? Not to much.

I HATED bikini girl from day one. She had a horrible voice and horrible attitude and just made it through because Simon and Randy drooled over her. Ugggh awful.

My fave so far is Skinny Indian Guy. I will learn his name eventually.

I think that's Anoop Deai. I like him too.
